James Lundie 1640-1696
James LUNDIE 1640-1696
Biographical Note
Lundie was the son of John Lundie, a regent at King’s College, Aberdeen. He attended King’s College, gaining his M.A. in 1657. After theological study, he was appointed to the second charge of the Tron Church, Edinburgh, in 1663. Thereafter he changed parishes frequently : St Giles, Edinburgh, 1665; Tolbooth, Edinburgh, 1672; Tron Church first charge in 1675; Dalkeith, 1680. However, he was deposed the following year for refusing to subscribe to the 1681 Test Act. Finally, he became minister of North Leith in 1687 and stayed there until his death in 1696.
Books
Lundie’s ownership of books is known only through a catalogue of his books dated 27 June 1672, that is over twenty years before his death. However, some titles may have been entered later. This list, given to Aberdeen University in 1930, has just under 400 entries, in two sequences, folios and quartos, and, within format, A-Z by author. The quarto sequence ends at the letter T, and so is obviously incomplete, and no books of less than quarto format are mentioned, No imprint information is given. It is a general collection, and subjects covered include theology, philosophy, language and literature, history, and a little science, medicine and law, with works both old and new (including Richard Cumberland’s De Legibus naturae first issued in 1672 itself).
