Richard SAMWAYES 1615/6-1669
Son of Richard Samwayes, vicar of Ilminster, Somerset. BA Corpus Christi College, Oxford 1634, MA 1637, fellow 1638-48, when he was ejected, but reinstated in 1660; BD 1661. Rector of Meysey Hampton, Gloucestershire 1661-69. He published Englands faithfull reprover and monitour in 1653; according to Anthony Wood, he had other works "fitted for the press", which were lost.
In his will, Samwayes bequeathed to Corpus Christi "all my books which are in my study fit for a library"; of the remainder, 50 books were to be given to his kinsman Peter Samwayes (1615-93), rector of Bedale), 40 to his cousin John Haugh, and the rest were to be kept in store by his executor for such of his nephews "as shall affect learning". Peter Samwayes was also to receive all his manuscripts and papers. Examples: in Corpus Christi, Oxford.
