Books

In his will, Hawes requests that 'all my books and household stuff... [are] to be sold as soon as conveniently may be', and his library was sold by retail sale in London beginning 20 November 1722. Advertisements in the Post Boy and other newspapers describe his books as being 'in Greek, Latin, English, French, Italian, and Spanish. Consisting of a very curious Collection of Books, relating to the History and Antiquities of Great Britain and Ireland, Architecture, Husbandry, Trade, Voyages, Poetry, and Lives of the most eminent Persons. Also a very large Collection of the Greek and Latin Fathers, historians, Lexicographers, &c... and most of the Classicks'. The medical books of an unnamed 'eminent Physician' were also listed in the sale.
