Licensed as [[occupation::schoolmaster]] at the Free Grammar School  , [[location::Appleby]] 1580, where he remained until his death, erecting a new school building in 1602.  His notes on the Roman Wall, which he sent to [[crossreference::William Camden 1551-1623|William Camden]] who described him as \u201ca very learned gentleman\u201d, are preserved in Cotton and Lansdowne manuscripts.\n\n====Books==== \n[[bequest::Bequeathed]] his books to [[beneficiary::Appleby School]], with the stipulation that the collection should not be sold or broken up.  A catalogue of the school library made in 1656 lists 295 items from Bainbrigg\u2019s bequest, of which 158 survive today (now in [[present repository::Newcastle University Library]]).  The books include works on [[subject::grammar]], [[subject::logic]], dialectic and [[subject::rhetoric]] in [[language::Latin]], [[language::Greek]] and [[language::Hebrew]].
