Sir John BROWNLOW or BROWNLOWE, 3rd bart 1659-1697
Biographical Note
Son of Sir Richard Brownlow, 2nd bart, of Humby, Lincolnshire, from whom he inherited the title in 1668. Asmitted at the Inner Temple, 1676. In 1679 he inherited the estate at Belton, Lincolnshire from his great-uncle Sir John Brownlow, greatly increasing his wealth; during the 1680s he rebuilt Belton House. He held various local administrative offices and was MP for Grantham 1689-97.
Books
The library at Belton House was continuously developed from the time of Richard Brownlow onwards, and contains books associated with many subsequent generations. Its growth largely took place during the 18th century (there were ca.1300 books there by 1730), but there numerous books at Belton today which can be associated with this Sir John.
