Philip STUBBS or STUBS 1665-1738
Biographical Note
Born in London, the son of Philip Stubbs and Elizabeth Hillier. Educated at Merchant Taylors’ School, London 1678-82, and matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford in 1683, becoming a scholar in 1684; BA 1686, MA 1689, BD 1722. He was elected a Fellow of the college and subdean in 1691. He was ordained in 1688, and subsequently occupied several clerical posts, amongst them chaplain of Greenwich Hospital for disabled seamen and Rector of St Alphage, London. In 1715 he became archdeacon of St Albans, and from 1719 was Rector of Launton St Mary, Oxfordshire. Married Mary Willis. Elected FRS in 1703. He published sermons and addresses, was active in the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, and was instrumental in the foundation of charity schools in London and Bicester.
Books
Stubbs was very likely the cataloguer of Wadham College’s printed books in 1687. He donated several manuscripts to the college in 1695, as well as to the Bodleian in 1728. His subsequent will bequeathed ‘Books printed or MSS (Except my Semons which I desire may all be burnt by my Executors before my Buryal)’ jointly to his wife Mary Stubbs and daughter Philippa.
He used an engraved armorial bookplate dated 1700 (Franks *535; *541 (another impression)).
Examples containing his bookplate: Bodleian Library Vet.F3.c.22; Yale Center for British Art, F2161.E97 1704.
