John BURGESS d.1707
Biographical Note
Presumably the man of this name whose will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1707, being then of the parish of St Martin in the Fields; he does not name an occupation, but refers to his brother William, a tailor in Reading, who with Peter Flood, merchant of London, was his executor.
Books
Burgess's library was auctioned in London beginning 21 February 1709. No catalogue survives but the sale was advertised in The Daily Courant as the library of Mr John Burgess, "late of London merchant", and was "a catalogue of English books, consisting of divinity, history, law, novels, poetry, plays, travels, voyages, mathematicks, romances. Neatly bound, and many gilt on the back". His will has no mention of books, dividing his estate between his wife and three daughters.
Characteristic Markings
None of Burgess's books have been identified.
