Biographical Note

Son of Henry Winstanley of Saffron Walden. Attended Saffron Walden Grammar School 1652-1660. Porter in service of James Howard, 3rd Earl of Suffolk 1665 at Audley End. He was later appointed clerk of the works at Audley End and at Newmarket. He was an occasional engraver, and also an engineer, who filled his house with mechanical inventions and built a lighthouse at Eddystone, Plymouth, where he died while conducting repairs during a storm in 1703.

Books

Winstanley's library was sold by retail sale in London from 24 October 1722. The bulk of the sale consisted of 'curious books selected out of several Libraries and Parcels bought at Sturbitch Fair', but it also included 'an uncommon collection belonging to the late famous Mr Winstanley of Littlebury, relating to Trade, Husbandry, Mathematicks, Parliament-Affairs, Medals, Architecture and Cuts'.
