Walter REA d.ca.1682?
Biographical Note
An untraced individual, described as ‘armiger’ (i.e. entitled to use a coat of arms).
Books
Rea's library was auctioned in London, beginning 19 June 1682. The sale catalogue contains 1685 lots, subdivided only by language and format – Latin, Greek, French and other languages (670 lots), English books (978), and 37 volumes of bound pamphlets. There is a wide range of imprint dates, with many 16th century books as well as 17th century ones. A blank page between the Latin and English sections is filled up with a list of 30 book auction sales held to date – i.e. since book auctions began in Britain in 1676 – ‘to gratify the curious, whose genius may lead them to make perfect their collection’.
