John MOUNTFORD d.1651
Biographical Note
Son of Thomas Mountford, prebendary of Westminster. BA Trinity College, Cambridge 1599, MA 1602, BD 1610, DD 1620. Prebendary of St Paul’s 1618, rector of Thorley, Hertfordshire 1619, vicar of Ware 1634, rector of Anstey and Therfield 1640, ejected 1643; prebendary of Ely 1644. He was accused of high church ceremonies, and of arresting churchwardens who were destroying imagery in church windows. He died in Tewin, Hertfordshire.
Books
While imprisoned in 1643, his library, reputedly worth £1000, was confiscated. His will refers to his “much mangled Library”, which he bequeathed to his three daughters, to be divided between them at the discretion of his widow and overseers; his widow was also to select any books “for her own private use or for the use of any of my grandchildren”, and his common law books were left to his son in law John Lang. He also directed that his “greatest English Bible of the latest edition and largest folio, printed by Robert Barker anno domini 1611” be given to Tewin parish church, “there to be used only in the service of God and not else where”.
Characteristic Markings
None of Mountford’s books have been identified.
