Matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford 1693, but did not graduate. He had a commission in the Coldstream Guards around the turn of the 18th century, and was an Irish MP 1713-15.

Books

Shirley used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 26787-8); the extent and disposition of his library is not known. He had 3 daughters, but no sons, and the earldom passed to his brother Henry, who was confined as a lunatic for part of his life.
