Peter Venables 1603-1669
Peter VENABLES 1603-69
Biographical Note
Son of Thomas Venables of Kinderton, Cheshire, from whom he inherited estates and the family title “Baron de Kinderton” in 1605; this was not a peerage, but a hereditary honour dating back to the time of the Norman Conquest. A royalist in the Civil War, he was MP for Cheshire in 1640, and again in 1661, and held various local administrative offices.
Books
Many books survive marked with one of three armorial stamps used by Venables, of the same design but different sizes. The extent and disposition of his library is not known, but the distribution of the books today suggests dispersal not long after Venables's death. Examples: Cambridge UL L.12.6, Rel.a.57.4; Christ Church, Oxford Wotton-under-Edge 108, 155, 205; Bodleian Crynes 341; National Art Library Clements O19.
