Biographical Note

Son of Henry Thompson of Escrick, Yorkshire, from whom he inherited the family estates in 1700. He seems to have been educated primarily at home and by travelling in Europe 1703-7. He married twice (Jane Beckwith, d.1739, and Sarah Roundell, d.1773) and was sheriff of Yorkshire in 1731.

Books

Thompson used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 29253). The extent of his library is not known; his eldest son Beilby, later MP for Hedon, was his main heir.
