Biographical Note

Son of a glover in St Albans; the family were evidently of French descent. Apprenticed to the London printer Eleanor Cotes 1668, freed 1675; he went on to establish a successful printing business based in Aldersgate, London, printing under his own name from 1687, and gaining a reputation as a trustworthy printer of learned works, who knew Latin. After his death, the business was continued by his widow Anne (d.1737) and son Benjamin (1693-1738).
