====Biographical Note====
Born at [[place of birth::Rushden, Northamptonshire]], sone of [[family::Thomas Whitby]], [[occupation::rector]] there. BA [[education::Trinity College, Oxford]] 1657, MA 1660, [[occupation::fellow of Trinity College, Oxford|fellow]] 1664, BD and DD 1672. [[occupation::Precentor]] of [[organisations::Salisbury Cathedral]] 1672, [[occupation::canon]] 1676; he remained based in [[location::Salisbury]] for the remainder of his career. He published numerous doctrinal works and Biblical commentaries from the 1660s onwards, some of which brought him into conflict with other senior ecclesiastical figures of the day, but was widely respected for his scholarship.

Whitby's library was auctioned in [[location::London]], beginning 6 February 1728; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the ''Daily Journal'' and ''Evening Post''.
