Daniel WHITBY 1637/8-1726

Biographical Note

Born at Rushden, Northamptonshire, sone of Thomas Whitby, rector there. BA Trinity College, Oxford 1657, MA 1660, fellow 1664, BD and DD 1672. Precentor of Salisbury Cathedral 1672, canon 1676; he remained based in Salisbury for the remainder of his career. He published numerous doctrinal works and Biblical commentaries from the 1660s onwards, some of which brought him into conflict with other senior ecclesiastical figures of the day, but was widely respected for his scholarship.

Books

Whitby's library was auctioned in London, beginning 6 February 1728; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the Daily Journal and Evening Post.
