Biographical Note

Known only as an unmarried member of a gentry family based in Taxall, Cheshire, from which members can be traced holding property and county offices between the 16th and 19th centuries. Her will, showing that she was then living at Stockport, refers to numerous siblings, cousins, nephews and nieces and includes monetary bequests of over £400, with £10 left to her maid. Her inventories, amounting in value to about £40, include a lot of materials relating to needlework, clothes, hats and trinkets.

Books

The probate inventories include “a little Bible and two other books” valued at 5s, “one box with 4 books in it” (8d), “one box with 53 books in it most of them old history books” (4s), and “a little psalm book” (4d). Her bequests included a Bible to her brother Edmond.
