Francis COLUMBINE d.1746

Columbine's bookplate (British Museum Franks Collection *247)

Biographical Note

Columbine's background and education have not been traced; he had a military career and was a major in the 8th Regiment of Foot, becoming a colonel by 1708 and major general in 1735. He was governor of Gibraltar 1739-40.

Columbine used an engraved armorial bookplate dated 1708 (Franks 6523/*247); the extent and disposition of his library is not known. His brief will has no mention of books, and all his estate and property was bequeathed to his wife Ann.
