Francis LODWICK 1619-1694

Biographical Note

Son of Waldrave Lodwick, a protestant refugee. A linguistic scholar, he was elected to the Royal Society in 1681 and published various works on linguistics, providing some inspiration for John Wilkins's An Essay towards a Real Character (1668). He was a friend of Samuel Hartlib and Robert Hooke, and was also a London merchant, involved in the trade of cloth and books.

Books

Shelf-lists of his two library collections, each containing ca.2500 volumes, are in British Library mss Sloane 855, 859. These were apparently dispersed after his death; many books are now in the Bodleian, where they can be identified from their distinctive numbering.
