Biographical Note

A Dr George Bethune is recorded as a physician in Coupar, Fife, in legal documents of 1761 and 1762 in one of which he is described as Provost of Coupar. In about 1764 he was a correspondent of Professor Alexander Monro about the use of smallpox vaccination in his practice in Coupar.

He was presumably a graduate of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. The Bethune family had a long medical history in Scotland.

Books

Used an engraved bookplate (Franks 2423): Bethune, George, MD.
