George BUCHAN d. before 1702
Biographical Note
Younger son of James Buchan of Auchmacoy and Oikhorne, Aberdeenshire, by Jane Fraser of Tyrie. His elder brothers were the Jesuit Alexander Buchan (d. 1716) and the Jacobite officer Major James Buchan of Auchmacoy (d. 1726). George graduated M.A. from King’s College, Aberdeen, 19 July 1666, and was presented by his father to the living of Logie-Buchan, Aberdeenshire, in June 1671. He was deprived as a non-juror in 1695 and died, apparently unmarried, before 1702.
Books
Buchan’s copy of John Row’s Hebrew grammar, the Qasûr hadiqdûq (Glasgow, 1644), with his signature on p. 29, is at Glasgow University Library Sp Coll T.C.L. 687. Otherwise, the extent and disposition of his library is unknown.
Characteristic Markings
He used an early armorial engraved bookplate (Franks 4205) with the motto “non inferiora secutus” (“shunning the inferior”) and the inscription “Mr Geo: Buchan”. An example is in the National Library of Scotland Henderson Smith Collection, J.H.S.1(42.3).
