Biographical Note

Son of Tobias Tonstall of Cleasby, Yorkshire. BA Queen’s College, Oxford 1637, MA (Magdalen Hall) 1640, B.Med 1647. Probably practised medicine in Yorkshire; author of Scarbrough spaw spagyrically anatomized (1670).

Tonstall’s library was auctioned in London, beginning 24 March 1684, as a joint sale with the books of Richard Chace (unidentified) and the physician Christopher Bathurst (d.ca.1684). The sale catalogue contains 2099 lots, divided between Latin theology (389 lots), Latin medicine (565), ‘Libri philologici’ (Latin, all other subjects, 562), English divinity (312), English all other subjects (175), and ‘Libri omissi’ (96). It is not possible to determine which books came from which source.
