Biographical Note
Born at Ardquin, County Down, younger son of Robert Echlin. Matriculated at Trinity College Dublin in 1667, though he did not take his MA degree until 1703; he was admitted at Lincolns Inn in 1672 and King's Inns, Dublin in 1677. After practising as an barrister he became a serjeant-at-law in 1683; after being briefly relieved of office at the end of James II's reign he became a judge in the Irish Court of Exchequer in 1690, and served in various Irish courts thereafter. He was knighted in 1692 and made a baronet in 1721.
Books
John Dunton, the bookseller, recorded that Echlin was a "universal lover of books", with a "large and curious library". It was auctioned in Dublin, beginning 28 January 1730; the catalogue lists 1260 lots.
