Henry HUTTON ca.1609-1655

Biographical Note

Son of Sir Richard Hutton, judge. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1629, MA 1632, fellow of Jesus College 1629, admitted at Gray's Inn 1625. Vicar of Long Marton, Westmorland 1640, canon of Carlisle 1643.

Books

In his will, Hutton directed that his library be entrusted to Arthur Savage, also a canon of Carlisle, to pass on to his son Richard when he came of age. He also left "Bishop Halles workes in two volumes or any other which my brother Savage shall select" to Lady Julian Musgrave, "to review in her closet", in recognition of her kindness to Hutton. The bequest to the son did not come to pass, and Savage gave Hutton's books, ca.240 volumes, to Carlisle Cathedral in 1691. The books are noted by Holtby as largely theological and patristic.
