Biographical Note

Born at Shottesbrooke, Berkshire, son of Henry Powle, landowner. Matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford 1646, but did not graduate; entered Lincoln's Inn 1647, barrister 1654. MP for Cirencester 1660 and re-elected several times during the 1670s and 80s, where he was active in political debate. Fellow of the Royal Society, ca.1663 (ejected 1685). He became Master of the Rolls in 1689.

Books

Powle assembled extensive legal and political manuscript collections which were dispersed after his death, and are now largely distributed between the British Library and the Bodleian. A catalogue of manuscripts probably belonging to him is in British Library Add.ms.11754. The extent of his printed book holdings is not known.
