James YONGE or YOUNG 1647-1721

Biographical Note

Born in Plymouth, son of John Yonge, surgeon there. In 1658 he was apprenticed to the naval surgeon Silvester Richmond, and during the 1660s was largely trained on a series of voyages and naval encounters. He settled in Plymouth in the early 1670s where he became surgeon to the naval hospital, and deputy surgeon-general to the navy. He became a prominent Plymouth citizen, serving as alderman and mayor there; he visited London several times, where he became a member of the Company of Surgeons and later an extra-licenciate of the Royal College of Physicians. He published several medical works and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1702; he retired from practice in 1703.

Books

Yonge's library was sold by retail sale in London, as part of a mixed sale with others, beginning 13 March 1718; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the Daily Courant.
