James YONGE or YOUNG 1647-1721

Biographical Note

Born in Plymouth, son of ;;family::John Yonge]], surgeon there. In 1658 he was apprenticed to the naval surgeon Silvester Richmond, and during the 1660s was largely trained on a series of voyages and naval encounters. He settled in Plymouth in the early 1670s where he became surgeon to the naval hospital, and deputy surgeon-general to the navy. He became a prominent Plymouth citizen, serving as alderman and mayor there; he visited London several times, where he became a member of the Company of Surgeons and later an extra-licenciate of the Royal College of Physicians. He published several medical works and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1702; he retired from practice in 1703.

Yonge's library was sold by retail sale in London, as part of a mixed sale with others, beginning 13 March 1718; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the Daily Courant.
