Sir John BARNEBY 1621-1701

Biographical Note

Born in Hull, son of John Barneby. His movements before the Restoration are unknown; he was elected MP for Weobley, Herefordshire in 1661, being resident at an estate at nearby Castle Pyon, the property of his second wife’s family. He was a Justice of the Peace for Herefordshire 1660-89 and held various other local public offices. He was an active MP during the 1660s and 70s, and served on numerous committees relating to trade, and religious toleration. He was knighted ca.1670. He was probably a non-juror after 1689, when he is not known to have held any posts.

Books

Barneby’s probate inventory lists “six hundred books of severall volumes” held in his closet, valued at £12. The fate of this collection is not known; his sons subsequently died childless.
