John DEIGHTON ca.1583-1640

Biographical Note

Surgeon, of Gloucester; Sheriff of Gloucester 1620-24.

Books

An indenture made in 1640, shortly before Deighton’s death (now Gloucestershire Archives D 381/1) records the sale of his library, and surgical instruments, to his son John (1607-1676, also a Gloucester surgeon). 186 books are listed; 121 are medical, the remainder mostly theological or historical. The medical books cover all branches of the subject, mostly in Latin, embracing classical authors through to contemporary ones; books published in the 1630s are included, so the collection was being developed up to the time of his death.

Characteristic Markings

None of Deighton’s books have been identified.
