Hamilton's bookplate (British Museum Franks Collection *552)

Biographical Note

Son of Robert Hamilton, 2nd Lord Belhaven and Stenton (1656–1708). He was chosen one of the sixteen representatives of the Scottish peerage, at the general election in 1715; appointed one of the gentlemen of the bed-chamber to George, Prince of Wales, and commanded the East Lothian troop of horse at the battle of Sheriffmuir 13th November 1715. He was travelling to take up appointment as governor of Barbados in 1721 but was shipwrecked and drowned on the Stag Rocks, near the Lizard Point.

Used an engraved bookplate:

Franks 13433/*552 (Hamilton), The Right Honorable John Lord Belheaven. (Probably the plate of the 3rd Baron, who succeeded 1708 and died 1721.)
