John HAMPDEN 1653-1696

Biographical Note

Of Great Hampden, Buckinghamshire. He was educated primarily on the continent, where he learnt Greek, Hebrew and Latin. MP for Buckinghamshire 1679 and for Wendover in 1681 and 1689. He was imprisoned in the tower in 1683 for conspiring against the succession of James II.

Books

Hampden's library was auctioned in London, 13.2.1699 (joint sale, with Robert Skinner).
