John NEWDIGATE or NEWDEGATE 1672/3-1705

Newdiagte's bookplate, dated 1702 (British Museum Franks Collection *364)

Biographical Note

Second son of Sir Richard Newdigate 2nd bart. and Mary (Bagot) of Arbury Hall, Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Probably attended Winchester College. Matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford in 1688. Admitted to Gray’s Inn 1687; barrister 1694. Admitted to the Inner Temple in 1702. Took possession of the family’s manor of Harefield, Middlesex.

Books

He used engraved armorial bookplates dated 1702: Franks *364 (‘John Newdigate, of Harefield in the County of Middlesex Esqr.’); 21720 (‘John Newdigate, of the Inner Temple, London, Esqr.’ (the last plate with inscription altered)).

No reference is made to books in his will, in which he bequeathed the bulk of his estate to his older brother, Richard (in due course 3rd bart.). The nature and the extent of his library are not yet established.

Examples with his bookplates:

manuscripts: Viscounts Daventry, Arbury Hall, MS 185; CR136/A414.

printed books: Folger Shakespeare Library, J928 (also containing bookplates of his nephew Roger (5th bart.) and of Arbury Library); GN238 (with initials and price); 181-146q.
