John TILLOTSON 1630-94

Biographical Note

Born at Haugh End, Halifax, Yorkshire; son of Robert Tillotson (d.1683). Matriculated at Clare College, Cambridge in 1647. Graduated BA in 1650 and MA 1654; made a fellow in 1651. Became chaplain to Edmund Pideaux and tutor to his son in 1656/7. In 1661/2 he became curate to Thomas Hacket, vicar of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Rector of Ketton (or Kedington), Suffolk and preacher to the Society of Lincoln's Inn in 1663. Chaplain to Charles II. prebend at Canterbury in 1670 and dean of Canterbury in 1672. Prebendary and canon of St Paul's 1675 and 1678; made Archbishop of Canterbury in 1690. He published numerous sermons throughout his life and career.
