John TOMKYS d.1703

Biographical Note

Of Bilston, Staffordshire. BA New Inn Hall, Oxford 1661, MA King’s College, Cambridge 1668. Vicar of Snitterfield, Warwickshire, 1683; prebendary of Wolverhampton 1695.

Books

Tomkys bequeathed his books to found a parish library at Bilston, requiring that a catalogue be made on parchment. His successor at Bilston, Richard Ames (d.1730) appears to have kept these books and passed them on, but their subsequent fate is unknown and no books remain there today.

Characteristic Markings

None of Tomkys’s books have been identified.
