John WINDEBANKE, 1618-1704

Biographical Note

Born in London, son of Sir Francis Windebanke, secretary of state to Charles I. BA New College, Oxford 1638, MA and fellow 1642, MD 1654. Spent time on the continent during the 1640s and early 1650s, studying and practising medicine, before returning and settling at Guildford as a physician. Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians 1680.

Books

Windebanke's library was sold as part of a mixed retail sale at Tom's Coffee House, Ludgate, beginning on 29 November 1704. No catalogue has survived but the sale was advertised in The Daily Courant as "the libraries of a learned divine and lawyer, and also of Dr. Windebank and Mr. Gadbury (John Gadbury, 1627-1704, astrologer) deceas'd, consisting of a good collection of books in divinity, history, law civil and common, physick, mathematicks, astrology etc in several languages. Also several volumes of sermons and choice tracts in several faculties bound and stitch'd, and manuscripts". Windebanke's will has no mention of books, but bequeathed "all the rest of my goods and chattels whatsoever" to his daughter Frances Loveday.
