Joseph GAYLARD 1657/8-1707/8

Biographical Note

Born in Exeter, son of Robert Gaylard, curate at Ede, Devon (ejected 1662, subsequently a nonconformist minister). MD Leiden University 1688, incorporated at Cambridge 1693. Surgeon to the Duke of Monmouth 1685, after whose failed rebellion he is believed to have escaped to the continent. He was admitted a candidate at the Royal College of Physicians in 1694 (but not apparently elected a fellow), and was a military physician in the West Indies in 1702.

Books

Gaylard’s library was sold by auction in London by Thomas Ballard, 28 January 1708. The catalogue lists 1230 lots, divided only by format, with all language and subject groups intermixed.
