Matthew SUTCLIFFE 1549/50-1629
Biographical Note
Son of John Sutcliffe of Melyoryd, Halifax. Admitted to Peterhouse, Cambridge in 1565; graduated BA in 1571. Proceeded MA and made fellow in 1574. LLD 1581. Admitted an advocate at Doctors' Commons in 1582. Made Dean of Exeter in 1588 and first provost of Chelsea College around 1609/10. He became a member of the council for Virginia in 1607 and the council for New England in 1620. A polemicist, he wrote vehemently against Catholicism and Arminianism. Fair copies of his works were presented to Emmanuel College, Cambridge by Nicholas Bernard in 1567.
