Paul D'EWES or DEWES 1567-1631

Biographical Note

Son of Garrat Dewes, bookseller in London. Matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford 1581, and again at Pembroke College, Cambridge 1584, but there is no record of graduation; he entered the Middle Temple in 1585 and went on to spend his career as one of the Six Clerks in Chancery. He bought an estate at Stowlangtoft, Suffolk in 1614, which became the family home; one of his sons, Simonds (1602-50) was a well-known antiquary and manuscript collector.

Books

A list of 122 books owned by d'Ewes ca.1610, mainly legal, survives in British Library MS Harl.70. His lengthy will has no explicit mention of books, and his goods and property were variously divided amongst his family.
