Richard HOOK d.1715

Biographical Note

Probably the son of Richard Hook, rector of Great Stanmore, Middlesex (d.1676). BA Clare College, Cambridge 1664, MA 1667, DD 1705. Rector of St George’s, Southwark 1681, of Great Stanmore 1687.

Books

In his will, Hook bequeathed to his daughter Mary Elizabeth his "great Bible with the Apocrypha in two volumes printed at Cambridge"; all the rest of his books were to go to his son Theophilus, except for "such English books as my wife shall think proper to take for herself and daughters". His library was however sold by retail sale in London shortly after his death, beginning 6 April 1715; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the Daily Courant as "a collection of valuable books in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and English, in several sciences and faculties, especially divinity".

Characteristic Markings

Mone of Hook's books have been identified.
