Robert MARSHAM, 1st Baron Romney 1685-1724

Biographical Note

Son of Sir Robert Marsham 1650-1703, 4th baronet, of Kent and Westminster, MP and landowner, from whom he inherited the baronetcy and family estates in 1703. Matriculated at St John's College, Oxford 1703, but did not graduate. MP for Maidstone 1708-16, when he was created Baron Romney. He was governor of Dover Castle from 1717, and extended the family landholdings in Kent by acquiring Allington Castle in 1720.

Books

An anonymous engraved armorial bookplate for a Marsham baronet (Franks 19826) seems likely to have been used by this man, before 1716. The extent of his library is not known; his will has no specific mention of books, and all his estates and property were assigned to trustees for the benefit of his wife and children.
