====Biographical Note====
Son of [[family::John Nicholas]] of [[location::Devizes, Wiltshire]], gentleman. BA [[education::Queen's College, Oxford]] 1613, entered [[organisations::Middle Temple]] the same year, [[occupation::barrister]] 1621. [[occupation::Recorder]] of [[location::Devizes]] 1639, [[occupation::MP]] for [[location::Devizes]] 1640; he became an active advocate of the parliamentarian cuase, and was involved in the impeachment of [[crossreference::William Laud 1573-1645|William Laud]]. He was [[occupation::Judge]] of the Upper Bench and [[occupation::Baron of the Exchequer]] during the Interregnum; he was pardoned at the Restoration, and retired to [[location::Wiltshire]].

====Books====
Nicholas gave books to [[beneficiary::Queen’s College, Oxford]].  Ca.25 [[subject::law|legal]] [[format::manuscript|manuscripts]] from his collections – mostly 17th c copies of [[subject::law]] reports, for use in his legal practice – survive among ([[crossreference::John Moore]]’s collection) in [[present repository::Cambridge University Library]].  His library may have been dispersed during the time of his grandson, the [[occupation::MP]] [[family::Oliver Nicholas]] (1651-1716).
