Samuel ROWLANDS 1565-1628

Biographical Note

Born at East Smithfield, London, son of Anthony Rowlands, cooper; the family were of Dutch descent. He followed in his father's trade, and served as a churchwarden and constable in his parish; he also wrote and published numerous verse satires, epigrams and devotional meditations.

A list of 34 books owned at the time of his death, inscribed on the flyleaf of a book, is edited as PLRE 271. The books include many literary titles, as well as some theology, history, and practical manuals on medicine and law; apart from one Dutch title, they are all in English.
