Biographical Note
This man’s identity is only such as can be deduced from the titlepage of the auction catalogue of his library, where he is described as “the Reverend Mr. Norton”. A Thomas Norton was rector of Bygrave, Hertfordshire 1653-96, but there are other Nortons listed in Foster and Venn who could be candidates.
Books
The Bibliotheca Nortoniana was sold by auction by Edward Millington in London, 14 December 1696. The catalogue, which is unusually short for a sale of this period, lists 187 lots, divided into Latin miscellaneous (104), Italian (9) and English miscellaneous (74). The contents are largely an unexceptional mixture of theology, history and classics, with a sprinking of other subjects, mostly 17th-century imprints with a handful of 16th-century ones.
