Thomas ROWNEY 1667/8-1727

Biographical Note

Son of Thomas Rowney, an Oxford attorney. Matriculated at St John’s College, Oxford in 1684; admitted to theInner Temple in 1686, and called to the bar in 1694. MP for Oxford, 1695-1722. Married Elizabeth Noel.

Books

He had an engraved armorial bookplate dated 1713 (‘Tho. Rowney of the City of Oxford, Esqr.’): Franks 25637.

The content and the extent of his library are not established. He or another member of his family was probably the donor of four books to St John’s College, Oxford. His will makes no reference to books, which presumably passed to the inheritor of the bulk of his estate, his elder son Thomas.
