Thomas SAVAGE ca.1622-1699

Biographical Note

Born in Worcestershire, son of Giles Savage, who inherited the estate of Elmley Castle, Worcestershire, from his brother Sir John in 1623. Thomas in turn inherited it on his father’s death in 1632. Matriculated at Pembroke College, Oxford 1638, but did not graduate; entered Gray’s Inn 1640. He raised a troop of horse for Charles I in the early 1640s but had deserted the cause by 1645, when he came before the Committee for Compounding for Worcestershire; he was fined £1500. It was stated then that many of his properties and crops had been destroyed by parliamentary troops. After the Restoration he was JP for Worcestershire, and county sheriff in 1682-83.

Savage’s probate inventory, relating to two separate properties, lists “bookes” in the study at Great Malvern valued at £30 (from a total valuation of £778, including plate at £170 and seven horses at £100), and “bookes of all sorts” in the closet at Elmley Castle valued at £10 10s (from a total valuation of ca. £300).
