Thomas THURLIN ca.1636-1714

Biographical Note

Born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, son of Thomas Thurlin, merchant. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1655, fellow 1657, MA 1658, BD 1665, DD 1681, President of St John's College, Cambridge 1683. Rector of Gaywood, Norfolk 1664-1714.

Books

In his will, Thurlin bequeathed "all my books both at Cambridge and Gaywood" to the parish library of King's Lynn (founded there ca.1617). He gave a copy of Suidas's Lexicon in 3 volumes to Christopher Anstey, one of his executors, and directed that the residue of his estate, after all other bequests were made, be given to St John's "for the buying of books for the Library". This amounted to ca.£300 which was duly spent on books. Ca. 440 books, valued at £160, were received at King's Lynn, where most of them remain today (listed in the donors' book, 1631-1835).

Characteristic Markings

The books purchased for St John's were marked with a printed book label (Lee 288).
