William BURNET 1688-1729
Biographical Note
Born in The Hague, son of Gilbert Burnet; William of Orange (William III) was his godfather. He was briefly educated at Trinity College, Cambridge but was expelled without graduating. He was appointed comptroller of customs in 1714, and in 1720 moved to America as governor of New York and New Jersey. In 1727 he exchanged this post for the governorship of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Despite being embroiled in many political controversies there, he was "noted for his competence, intelligence and honesty" (ODNB).

Burnet's library was auctioned in London, beginning 7 January 1731.
