William LEVINZ 1625-1698

Biographical Note

Son of William Levinz of Evenley, Northamptonshire. Probationary fellow of St John's College, Oxford 1641, BA 1645, MA 1649. He remained in Oxford through the Interregnum and was professor of Greek from 1665; in 1673 he became President of St John's. He was also rector of Handborough, Oxfordshire, and a canon and subdean of Wells.

Levinz's library was auctioned in Oxford, 29.6.1698. The sale catalogue contains 3478 lots, "with about 200 more volumes of tracts and pamphlets bound, stitcht in bundles of all sorts, ancient and modern"; they are subdivided into Latin theology (393 lots), Latin miscellaneous (1269), French books (516, a noticeably high proportion), Italian and Spanish books (253), English divinity, English miscellaneous (608), Common law (55) and miscellaneous tracts (56).
