====Biographical Note====
Salmon's origins are obscure and there is no record of a formal education; he was reputedly [[apprentice::apprenticed]] to an unlicensed medic with whom he travelled extensively, including to [[location::America]], learning practical medical techniques.  By 1671 he was established in [[location::London]] near [[organisations::St Bartholomew's Hospital]] as a [[occupation::physician]] and he practised from various [[location::London]] locations for the rest of his life.  He also published extensively and successfully, including popular medical works (e.g. [[book title::''The family dictionary'']], [[date of publication::1696]], [[book title::''Collectanea medica: the country physician'']], [[date of publication::1703]]), [[translator::translations]] of [[language::Latin]] [[subject::medicine|medical]] texts, and some [[subject::theology|theological]] works (e.g. [[book title::''A discourse against transubstantiation'']], [[date of publication::1690]]).

====Books==== 
Salmon had an extensive personal library.  In his will, he [[bequest::bequeathed]] "a small library of books for my own private use" together with gold, plate, medals, pictures, furniture and other household goods to [[beneficiary::Eleanor Gray]], daughter of [[associates::Andrew Gray]] of [[location::Billericay]], [[occupation::grocer]].  The books intended here were presumably physically separate from the bulk of his library, which he directed to be sold "to the best advantage either by auction or otherwise", the proceeds to be used to pay [[monetary value::£1000]] to his brother, [[family::Francis Salmon]], [[occupation::physician]], of [[location::Gosport]].

Salmon's books were sold by [[auction::auction]] by [[auctioneer::Thomas Ballard]] in [[location of auction::London]], in two sales beginning [[date of auction::16 November 1713]], and [[date of auction::10 March 1714]].  The catalogue for the pars prima lists 3681 lots, divided between [[language::Latin]] (and other languages) [[subject::theology]] (380), [[language::Latin]] [[subject::medicine]] and [[subject::surgery]] (497), [[language::Latin]] [[subject::mathematics]] (218), [[language::Latin]] miscellaneous (1007), [[language::English]] [[subject::theology]] (428), [[language::English]] [[subject::medicine]] and [[subject::medicine|surgery]] (149), [[language::English]] [[subject::mathematics]] (152), [[language::English]] miscellaneous (850).  The pars secunda contained 2155 lots, divided into [[language::Latin]] and [[language::Greek]] books (377), [[language::English]] books (1604), Mathematical instruments (33), Books of cuts in folio (46), [[subject::Prints]] (19) and Paintings (76).  The entire sale therefore included 5836 lots, of which ca.5700 were books.
