William SILL d.1687

Biographical Note

Born in Yorkshire. BA Trinity College, Cambridge 1657, MA 1662. Vicar of Addingham, Cumberland, 1668-73, prebendary of Carlisle 1668-81, Vicar of Bromfield and of Torpenhow 1673-81, Archdeacon of Colchester 1678-81, Rector of St Augustine’s, Watling Street, London 1681-87, prebendary of Westminster 1681-87.

Books

Sill’s library was auctioned in London by Edward Millington in two separate sales, 21 and 29 November 1687. The Latin books were sold first in a sale which also included the books of Cornelius Callow; it is not possible to be sure which belonged to which, but 807 vols of Latin theology, philology and other subjects were included, together with 54 Italian books. The separate sale of English books comprised 492 vols plus 38 vols of tracts and sermons, mostly imprints from the second half of the 17th century.

Characteristic Markings

None of Sill’s books have been identified.
